\beta (word weights) identifies the words that are informative in distinguishing between political actors - represents the discriminatory power of a word. Words with higher \beta values are more effective in distinguishing between the political positions of the actors or documents.

\psi represents the word fixed effects, accounting account for the fact that certain words are used more frequently across all actors (or documents), regardless of the actor’s political position.represents the general frequency of a word across all documents or actors. It shows how often a word is used, regardless of its discriminatory power.

Since \psi (word fixed effects) captures the baseline frequency of a word across all documents, a negative value indicates that the word is used below the average frequency compared to other words in the corpus
